Former GCHQ head Sir Iain Lobban Joins Encryption Specialists SQR Systems as Business Advisor to the Board
Experienced cyber security expert supports development of UK-based Startup ecosystem
LONDON — March 21, 2016 — SQR Systems, a London-based specialist in encrypted mobile communications has today announced that Sir Iain Lobban, former Head of GCHQ, will join the company as a business advisor to the Board. In his role, Sir Iain will be advising on strategy to accelerate the uptake of the company’s encrypted mobile communications software Ceerus amongst enterprise and government customers, whilst working alongside SQR Systems to develop, nurture and promote the UK as a centre of excellence in Cybersecurity.
SQR Systems and Sir Iain’s mutual interest in fostering an emerging cyber security startup industry was developed through his involvement in the Cyber London (CyLon) accelerator initiative where SQR was amongst the inaugural cohort of cyber security start-ups. The business relationship flourished due to their combined belief in enabling businesses to take control of the privacy of employee and customer data while improving the user experience of secure communications tools to make it the default way of communicating in enterprise.
According to Dr Nithin Thomas, CEO of SQR Systems: “Sir Iain’s extensive experience in the cyber security industry is a massive advantage for our company and the UK startup scene as a whole. As a London based startup ourselves, we have been through the challenges of trying to be heard over bigger players in the market and have come out the other side thanks to individuals like Iain who dedicate their time and share their knowledge. We are seeing a huge surge in innovative startup companies that are paving the way with new technologies that can change the way government and businesses protect themselves against cyber threats. We’re confident that in working with Iain we’ll benefit from his experience of working at the highest levels within the British industry and will learn a great deal that can be passed onto budding entrepreneurs.”
Sir Iain Lobban added: “We are seeing a new generation of exciting cyber security solutions, with real opportunities for smaller companies with vision, dynamism and talent. “Some of the most ground-breaking innovations are coming out of small companies like SQR. It’s a really motivating time to work with these cutting-edge SMEs, helping to develop their strategy and to shape their business opportunities.”
